The Mornington Peninsula township of Hastings is dominated by a busy marina and port, where operators of the fishing smacks of the local fleet offer both the pick of their fresh catches and chartered fishing cruises of Western Port Bay.
Walking trails follow the shoreline and extensive cycling tracks are a feature of the town.
Heritage enthusiasts will find a gold mine in historic Coolart Homestead in nearby Somers where history co-exists with wildelife, while twitchers will be in their element in the local bird sanctuary.
The natural attractions of the Peninsula - including the tasting rooms of a couple of dozen boutique wineries - are within comfortable driving distance while the satellite town of Tyabb has an array of well-stocked antique shops and galleries.
To the south of Hastings, Australia's largest military training establishment, HMAS Cerberus, holds dominion over 3400ha of land and water at the head of Hann Inlet.
The base boasts a museum generously stocked with military paraphernalia dating back to early white settlement. The museum is open to the public on Sunday, while booked tours can be arranged on Tuesday and Thursday.
