Broke Fordwich is the only officially recognised wine sub-region of the Hunter Valley
. Although only a short drive from Pokolbin, the region's microclimate is significantly different and the wines it produces have their own characteristics. The sub-region produces about one quarter of Hunter Valley wines and has won its share of awards. The vineyards are concentrated on and just off Milbrodale Road.
The village of Broke lies on Wollombi Creek with Yellow Rock, part of the Brokenback Ranges, behind it. It makes an excellent base for exploring the Hunter Valley and there's plenty to do, with wine tasting and cellar door sales a popular pastime for many visitors. The village retains its rural character as a winemaker's centre.
The Hunter Valley is noted for its gourmet produce and fine restaurants. Other activities in the area include bushwalking, wildlife spotting, adventure tours and shopping for antiques in the many antique shops.
