Straddling the Pacific Highway and the railway line, Chatswood is the major shopping and commercial centre on Sydney’s North Shore. All of the large retailers have department stores in the major shopping malls on the eastern side of the railway line, while most of Chatswood’s 300,000 square metres of commercial office space is concentrated to the west of the railway station.
Chatswood is also a highly-desirable residential area which has been targeted by young, two-income executive couples. Chatswood’s residential popularity, of course, is enhanced by the suburb’s centrality and a train and bus service that means you are within 20 minutes or so of the heart of Sydney.
Over the last few years, Chatswood has developed a distinct, village atmosphere, with the installation of a combination of traffic islands and speed bumps successfully diverting much of the through traffic from residential streets. At the same time, the commercial centre has seen an explosion in the number of Asian restaurants and food outlets.
