A visit to the Melbourne suburb of Craigieburn on Melbourne’s northern fringe gives you the chance to see the high-security complex of the note-printing branch of the Reserve Bank. Sadly, due to government cutbacks, it is no longer possible to watch the notes rolling off the press from the public gallery.
The Hume Highway suburb's Scottish name was introduced to the area by the host of the historic, bluestone Craigieburn Inn which snared the passing trade alongside the old 15-mile post.
Bird fanciers will feel right at home at the Beveridge Birdworld, 16km further north along the Hume Highway from Craigieburn. The aviaries are set in a park which also includes a hedge maze, an animal nursery, playground and BBQ-equipped picnic area.
