The comfortable, middle-class suburb of Floreat Park lies between Perth’s CBD and the coast, about 7km east of the city's bright lights.
It’s a wonderful place for families, with the extensive Herdsman Lake and its neat recreational facilities on Floreat Park’s northern boundary, and the wide, open, green expanses of Bold Park, Perry Lakes and the Wembley Downs golf course forming the eastern border.
And then it’s just a short drive east to such beaches as City Beach, Scarborough and Swanbourne, and the wide Swan River is close by, too.
The City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club, which protects City Beach, is one of Australia’s largest and most successful surf lifesaving clubs, despite the general paucity of the waves compared to the pick of the eastern crop and the isolation of Western Australia.
The club was formed in 1924 by members of the City of Perth Amateur Swimming Club to provide a volunteer water safety and surf rescue service and it has grown wildly since then.
