This terrific little coastal town at the mouth of the Moore River, about 100km north of Perth, stands guard over the wreck of the Dutch ship Gilt Dragon, which foundered on an off-shore reef in 1656.
Divers are always on the lookout for relics from the wreck, when they can fight their way through the swarms of fish in the water. This is a great fishing spot and a wonderful place for swimming and generally frolicking in the sun.
Those who know say Guilderton is at the centre of some of the best windsurfing territory in the world, too. The annual Ledge Point (about 28km north of Guilderton) to Lancelin Windsurfing Classic has gained world status.
Apart from the fishing and windsurfing, the area is noted for its safe swimming alternatives – extra good if you have youngsters in tow, so it's no wonder that Sandgropers (as West Australians like to call themselves) from Perth and further south have been coming up here for years for their holidays.
