In the foothills to the Mt Lofty Ranges on the scenic Torrens Gorge Ring Road, Gumeracha is a small town just 40 or so kilometres east of Adelaide.
Centrepiece of the town is the Toy Factory where fearless children and strong-hearted parents can mount the world’s largest rocking horse for a spectacular family album snap.
Dads will be in their element in nearby Birdwood where the National Motor Museum has assembled what is widely acknowledged as Australia’s most important collection of vehicles. The museum displays more than 300 veteran, vintage and classic cars and the attractively maintained grounds are perfect for a family picnic.
Surrounding farms are famous for their fresh, mouth-watering strawberries. Gumercha lies of the Torrens River Gully, at the heart of a region whose white history traces back to 1839.
The opening of the Main North Eastern Road from Adelaide in the mid-19th century sparked major development and many of the heritage buildings such as Gumercha's Salem Baptist Church date from this period.
