Sapphires might be Inverell’s best friend, but this large New England
town 69km west of Glen Innes has a lot more to offer than just the chance to fossick for gemstones.
It is also an adventure land with the nearby Copeton Dam and Pindari Dam recreational areas offering boaties, water-skiers, anglers, swimmers, bush-walkers, off-roaders and picnickers plenty of scope to follow their star.
Between October and March vast amounts of water are released from the two dams to feed thirsty cotton crops and the downstream flows attract adventurers and whitewater rafters.
Inverell boasts a number of fine old buildings and none is more impressive than the court house. The fourth to grace the town, the present court was built in rendered brick between 1886 and 1889 and is set off by an imposing clock tower. Red cedar dominates the interior. The court is complemented by the CBC Bank built directly across the street at about the same time.
