The 52km Wide Bay Highway drive west from Gympie to Kilkivan takes you via the Brooyar Forest Drive, Woolooga, Rossmore and the Mt Clara Chimneys.
The Rossmore Road turn-off two kilometres east of Kilkivan opens on to a twisting track that eventually leads to an impressive old Chinese smelter chimney that has been restored by the Natural Trust to the grandeur in the 1870s gold rush days.
Kilkivan’s Historical Museum also commemorates the discovery of gold in the shire in 1852 - the first recorded find in Queensland.
Kinbombi Falls, 25km south of the town, has a swimming hole, walking tracks and other visitor facilities.
Title to the Booubyjan Homestead has been in the name of the pioneering Lawless family since two Irish brothers took up the founding land selection in 1847. The slab and shingle homestead has been recently restored to its original condition.
The towns of Goomeri (The Clocktown), Murgon and Cherbourg lie to the south-west on the road to Kingaroy.
