If you’re interested in the development of the timber industry in WA - or you just like wood - then the lovely town of Manjimup, in the south of WA about 309km from Perth and 130km south-east of Bunbury, should be included on your itinerary. Timber archways on the main road in and out of town proclaim Manjimup as the gateway to Tall Timber Country in deference to the majestic jarrah and karri trees which grace the surrounding forests and have provided the town with much of its livelihood for decades. Otherwise, this is a big apple growing area, with other fruit crops and dairying prominent on the economic scale. Manjimup has WA’s only timber industry museum and an extensive and attractive Timber Park, which is just perfect for walks and picnics. For a change of pace, you could visit the beautifully-positioned Manjimup Water Ski Park set beside a lake on a commercial cattle property. There are boats and equipment for hire, barbecues and a camping area.
