Perched on the southern shores of Lake Illawarra, about 25km south of Wollongong, Oak Flats is the perfect base for a fishing, boating or surfing holiday on NSW's magical South Coast.
Oak Flats is just a few minutes drive from Windang, which guards the lake's ocean outlet. Close by is Shellharbour and a number of the fine surfing beaches that this stretch of coast is renowned for.
Bass Point, which stands at the southern end of a sweeping beach which separates it from Shellharbour, boasts a nature reserve and a memorial to the victims of a 1943 shipwreck.
While the weather in some of the northern NSW coastal playgrounds might be warmer and more consistent, none is more exciting than the South Coast in terms of surfing, boating, water-skiing, sail-boarding or jet skiing, fishing from the beach, rock, river or estuary or the grandeur of coastal, rainforest or hinterland mountain scenery.
There are plenty of boat launching ramps in this area, and caravan parks and camping areas abound.
