Set in the Adelaide Hills, Oakbank becomes the focus of national racing attention when the best jumpers in the land gather for the annual Great Easter Steeplechase. The rich race is the centrepiece of the largest picnic race meeting in the southern hemisphere.
The Oakbank Weavers operate from the Old Pikes Brewery and you can tap into the strong farming and steam train heritage with a visit to the Platform One Heritage Farm Railway. The complex allows children to learn about farm life while spicing their visit with a ride on the miniature railway.
Oakbank is central to the Hills hot spots including nearby Hahndorf which is among South Australia’s top tourist attractions. Settled by Prussian and Silesian religious refugees, Hahndorf retains its distinctive German character which is revitalised every January when the town hosts the state’s largest ethnic festival, Schuetzenfest. Held originally as a fund-raiser for the Hahndorf Academy, which fosters local art and craft, the annual knees-up is now acknowledged as the largest beer festival in the world outside of Germany.
