Widely recognised as Australia’s boating capital, Paynesville is the sort of town where the locals prefer cruising to walking. Paynesville is headquarters for the Lakes Yacht Club and regularly hosts speedboat racing carnivals.
The Anglican church in this Gippsland town, St Peter’s By The Lake, sets the town’s nautical theme with its lighthouse spire and a pulpit fashioned in the shape of a prow.
There are pelicans, swans and dolphins to admire and befriend and you can explore lake islands such as Raymond and Rotamah. Raymond, which is accessible by ferry, is home to a colony of koalas and Rotamah features a bird observatory.
Set on the McMillan Straits, Paynesville is 18km from Bairnsdale, major trading town for the Gippsland area and holiday town. One of the features that sets Bairnsdale apart is the art work in St Mary’s Church where the wall and ceiling murals were painted in the 1930s by a modern-day Michelangelo named Francesco Floriani.
