This delightful, upmarket suburb, just over the Narrows Bridge south of Perth’s CBD, meanders down from lofty vantage points to the shores the Swan River, directly across the magnificent waterway from the business heart of Perth.
South Perth is home to the Royal Perth Golf Club and the beautifully-presented, award-winning Perth Zoo, with its must-see nocturnal house. The zoo's newest attraction is its Rainforest Retreat which combines a beautiful winding walkway with a stunning array of Australian tropical rainforest flora and several rest and contemplation areas.
Inside the retreat you can enjoy the tranquillity of a cascading waterfall amid the sounds and smells of a real rainforest, while learning about the important role these forests play on our planet. A suspension bridge across the misty waterfall gully offers great views of the middle storey and canopy of this beautiful stand of Australian rainforest.
From Como, a pleasant trip is to take a ferry across to South Perth from the Barrack Street jetty on the city side of the river and just wander around taking in the sights and sounds.
The standout landmark in South Perth is the Old Mill. The sails on this whitewashed mill, which houses a collection of colonial artefacts, have been turning in the balmy river breezes since 1838.
