Just a lung-stretching stroll from the city square, the inner-eastern suburb of Toorak Gardens is not only at the doorstep of Adelaide’s distinctive public buildings, museums, galleries, parks and renowned restaurants, but is close to stylish Burnside Village in neighbouring Glenside. Graced with leafy courtyards and shade verandahs, the user-friendly Burnside complex contains more than 80 boutiques and specialty shops. This is designer-territory for fashion, craft, exquisite jewellery and, in fact, just about every indulgence right down to the presentation of food. As the spin-doctors insist, the village is ‘genteel, with a slightly clubby feel’ - one of Adelaide’s prime spots to shop, sip coffee and be seen or to watch the social set strut their stuff. The suburb of Toorak Gardens is central to the City of Parks, the Burnside municipality. The glory of its parks aside, the community is also a strong supporter of the arts which are centred on the Art and Craft Workshop where artists and crafts people create in a building converted from an old water storage tank.
