About 56km east of Jerilderie in the Riverina district down near the Victorian border, Urana has as its social and recreational centre the quite extensive Lake Urana, just a few kilometres to the west of town.
The lake is a favourite boating, fishing and swimming spot and visitors are well catered for in the way of camping, picnicking and barbecuing facilities.
If you're down this way, have a look at the Kelly gang relics in the Telegraph Office Museum at Jerilderie. The gang held the town at gunpoint for two days in 1879 while they robbed the bank.
But the infamous Mr Kelly and his friends aren’t the only bushrangers to have plied their trade around these parts where Dan ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan chased the Wagga Police Magistrate, Henry Baylis, into the bush and robbed him.
Morgan then had the gall to ask Baylis to ‘go easy’ on him if he ever appeared before the magistrate's court. Morgan never fronted Baylis, but got his just desserts when he was gunned to death by police officers at Peechelba Station in 1865.
