Along with Healesville and Sherbrooke, Warburton is a major resort town in the Yarra Ranges, foothills to the Great Dividing Range. Warburton and its highly regarded craft shops and galleries are just an hour’s drive from Melbourne and the town is becoming an increasingly popular base for forays to the Yarra Valley wineries.
The Acheron Way approach to Warburton opens up views of Mt Donna Buang. Just seven kilometres out of town, the mount is often capped in snow in winter and two toboggan runs operate from the summit.
There are picnic facilities at the visitors’ centre at the Upper Yarra Dam, 16km to the north-east. The country around Warburton is perfectly tailored to bush-walking, horse-riding and bird-watching. If you are into serious walking, drop into the Conservation and Environment Department offices in Healesville or Powelltown for leaflets and guides to the regional tracks on the Centenary Trail.
