The small Wimmera town of Watchem on the Sunraysia Highway lies in country recognised as a traditional producer of grain, fat lambs and, more recently, oil seeds.
It is also within comfortable driving distance of a series of lakes which offer a wide variety of recreational pursuits. The largest in the system is Lake Buloke, just a few minutes drive south-east from Watchem. This large lake is a seasonal hunting ground for duck-shooters and is a primary breeding ground for a wide range of wildlife. Buloke is central to an inland aquatic chain which also includes Batyo Catyo and Brown’s lakes which are popular havens for anglers and water-skiers.
The largest town in the district is Donald where the Tourist Information Centre will advise you on the location of the regional historic and scenic attractions. A centre with a population of 1700, Donald is about half an hour’s drive south on the highway from Watchem.
