‘It all happens in Y’nar, y’know’ rings the catchcry in the bar of the Yinnar Commercial Hote, social hub of the small Latrobe Valley town of the same name.
The ‘all’ includes weekly showtime on the hotel's C & W music stage, the kiss of the plane on a hardwood surface in the jarrah craft workshop, the sound of a trout breaking the surface of the Morwell River which runs through the town and exhibitions in the ARC Gallery.
Established in the old Yinnar Butter Factory in 1982, the gallery has steadily built a reputation for the quality of its art works and its encouragement of emerging local artists. Local art is also on show at the cutely named Matchbox Gallery.
The town celebrated its 100th birthday in 1974 and money raised during the prolonged knees-up was used to establish Centenary Park on Main Street and to kick start the Community Sports Stadium in the primary school grounds.
The major La Trobe municipality towns of Morwell, Moe and Traralgon are just a few minutes away by car and the scenic joys of the Gippsland lakes and Ninety Mile Beach marine system are within an hour’s drive.
