| The Illawarra |
The area around Wollongong to the south of Sydney is a great place to explore
for the weekend. Forget the freeway, head down there on the scenic route, through the Royal National Park and the small coastal
coal mining villages north of Wollongong. Stop to admire the stunning coastal scenery at one of the many lookouts en route. In
Wollongong, visit the City Gallery with its soaring architecture and interesting collection. Further south, Minnamurra
Rainforest Centre provides a unique look at the native flora and fauna of the area. Kiama, with its famous blowhole, is a
pretty seaside town. Birdwatchers should head for Barren Grounds Bird Observatory near Jamberoo, where wildlife-watching
activities are regularly scheduled.
